Project Overview

Weather on the Way (WOW) is an integrated mobility intelligence platform developed to strengthen road safety by providing real-time, location-specific weather and hazard information to motorway operators and commuters. The system uses WeatherWalay's hyper-local weather infrastructure and sensing capabilities to monitor changing road conditions, including fog, visibility, rainfall, wind, temperature, and air quality. This intelligence is translated into actionable advisories and delivered through variable message signs, digital channels, and operational dashboards. WOW enables a shift from reactive road safety management to anticipatory mobility planning, helping authorities issue timely warnings and allowing motorists to adjust their travel behavior before entering hazardous zones.

Strategic Objective

To establish a scalable, climate-smart road safety framework that integrates real-time weather intelligence into motorway and highway operations, enabling anticipatory action, reducing weather-related travel risk, and improving commuter safety across Pakistan's transport infrastructure.

Key Components

  • Hyper-local weather monitoring along critical road corridors
  • Fog and visibility detection for high-risk motorway segments
  • Real-time rainfall, wind, temperature, and humidity monitoring
  • Air quality sensing for road-user and environmental awareness
  • Intelligent motorist advisory system
  • Location-specific hazard warnings through variable message signs
  • Digital dissemination of travel-risk advisories
  • Operational dashboard for motorway and network managers
  • Data-driven evidence base for national-scale rollout
  • Scalable framework for integration across highways and motorways

Anticipated Outcomes

Improved Road Safety

Reduced exposure of commuters to dangerous weather conditions through timely, location-specific warnings before they reach affected areas.

Faster Operational Decision-Making

Enhanced situational awareness for motorway operators through real-time weather and hazard intelligence, enabling faster and more informed operational responses.

Better Fog & Visibility Management

Improved detection and communication of fog-related risks, especially in high-impact motorway corridors where visibility changes can create serious safety challenges.

Anticipatory Mobility Planning

A shift from reactive incident response to proactive travel-risk management, allowing commuters and operators to plan around hazardous conditions.

Climate-Smart Infrastructure

Demonstration of how weather and climate intelligence can be systematically embedded into transport infrastructure to improve resilience and public safety.

National Rollout Potential

The M-2 pilot establishes the operational model, technical standards, and impact evidence base for scaling WOW across Pakistan's motorway and highway network.
